Now this is the sort of place where you could bury yourself away for a few weeks and sit down and write a book. Which is precisely what the lady in the cottage next door was doing.....

.... It’s the tranquility, you see: in the simplicity of the whitewashed Georgian cottages, amongst the gums or cherry orchard or down by the river, fishing for trout. It’s also the humbling sense of history that pervades all the convict-built, National-Trust-listed buildings. Exploring the Ticket-of-Leave building, Pugmill and Rose cottage, steeped in Riggall family memorabilia, is like stepping back in time. Most remarkable of all is the homestead, with its spiked palisades and window bars, a reminder that life on this antipodean Emerald Isle was fraught with danger. Somercotes was so well protected (only one attack breached the embrasures, leaving a bullet lodged in an architrave) that bushrangers were indignant to find such a fortress and Martin Cash complained of meeting a determination to defend property unbecoming of a gentleman. No such criticism of Jan and Robert, the sixth generation to live and farm here, your spirited hosts and guides. They packed me off to my cottage with a basket of freshly-baked bread, then, on remembering the guide’s disposition toward freshly-squeezed juice, popped in a couple of oranges! Bury yourself away here by all means, but don’t miss out on all that Somercotes has to offer.
