Jo and Ron have gone all out to score highly on the wow-ometer… and you might just say they’ve succeeded. For a start the setting is something else: five architect-designed cabins lazing on a sun-dappled savannah and blending into their surroundings like the grazing kangaroos before them.....

.... Above the clearing loom the viridian peaks of the Grampians, the mountainous National Park with which the property shares a kilometre-long border. Preserving a harmonious relationship with these surroundings is paramount for the Paynes: they recently planted 8,000 native trees, mostly varieties of wattle. Inside, the wow factor really runs riot. Throughout the open-plan, oak-and-glass structure there are stainless-steel fittings, designer furniture, recessed appliances, granite worktops and Italian ceramics, all cannily positioned to make the most of the enthralling natural landscape. A cascade of glass frames the technicolour vista like a giant cinema screen. In fact, the whole effect is a bit like stepping into a film set. No expense has been spared to provide the best. But it’s okay, no-one can see you - or so I’m told - so make the most of the widescreen LCD TV, DVD, CD and iPod dock, Smeg oven and La Cimbali espresso-maker while you can. There’s even a spare hiking-pack, handy for an energetic romp up Mt. Abrupt. When you get back, run a deep bath, add a drop of essential oil, light a candle and star-gaze, abandoning any ambition to go out for the evening. A stay here comes with a satisfaction guarantee.
