After a long drive in scene-stealing dusk, there’s nothing better than to arrive to a warm welcome. Edging through the white picket gate, gravel crunching under foot, I rounded a box-hedge and pulled up at the old pine and iron-lace verandah, where I was greeted by Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret - roses, that is.....

.... Quamby is awash with them. Ailsa and William were at the lead-light front door and led me into a grand sitting-room, fire blazing beneath marble mantle, and thrust a welcome beer into my hand. That evening, I was treated to a gastronome’s delight and we talked long into the night, before I retired to my "room", an original schoolhouse dating back to the 1880s. You can also stay in the self-contained, white weatherboard carriage house or in one of five Mews rooms. On a summer’s evening, imbibe the pastoral view from its terrace. Morning brought garden-grown produce which I walked off over the croquet lawn, through orchards, round dams and past a herd of Hereford and Charolais cattle grazing beside giant, lumbering oaks. With all this, plus the Twelve Apostles, Grampians and Tower Hill, an extinct volcano where I encountered an alarmingly Jurassic emu, on your doorstep, you’ll be in no hurry to leave.
