Bold angles, bright colours and plenty of windows lend Captain’s a breezy beach-house feel. Although Robin and Lynne knocked down the captain’s cottage to build their contemporary B&B, he is commemorated in the nautical theme that runs throughout.....

.... With shading sails and reclaimed timber, maritime artefacts are used to good effect. There’s even a sepia still of the captain himself, standing on the obsolete Apollo Bay pier, part of which now sits solidly above the fireplace. The summery rooms are individually decorated with different hues, hand-picked artwork and fresh flowers. Each of the spotless bed-sitting-rooms have their own access fore and aft, with sliding doors leading onto their own private, planted patios. My favourite was the sunny Loft with its soaring ceilings, sisal carpeting and crafted staircase, atop of which are two bedrooms, with windows low enough to look out of when you lie in. When you do surface, dive into the famous Captain’s breakfast, usually a lively affair with guests trading traveller’s tales. Robin and Lynne are consummate hosts, always on hand for a chat or to attend a need. After a full day on the beach, snorkelling, surfing or sunbathing, or in the rainforests walking among the wildlife and waterfalls, you’ll be glad to return to the lounge where they’ll fix you a drink and let you in on more local secrets.
