It was pouring with (much-needed) rain when I arrived at Bishopsgate and Marg was concerned about her guests’ Big Day. I felt better off taking tea in her Victorian sitting-room with its imposing ten-foot gilt mirror, bequeathed by the previous owners, doubtless unwilling to risk bad luck by moving it.....

.... Bishopsgate bears the imprint of Marg’s many passions. The Oriental Room reflects her specialisation in Asian studies; the French Room her francophilia. With its wicker bed, large cushions, gilt mirror on an easel and private west-facing sunroom, this is the choix des amants. She loves cooking, too, and savvy guests eschew local restaurants in favour of her home-cooked cuisine. The gazebo in the garden courtyard housed a string quartet and served fine finger food during the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. But it is the many little touches that make Bishopsgate special. Wine (from evocative-sounding vineyards) and phone calls are free, guests are provided with a pouch of Bishopsgate’s own aroma-therapeutic toiletries (mine now commandeered as a rather natty pencil-case) and Marg is quick to offer you a tipple when you arrive or a latte from her new coffee-machine. With such hospitality, you knew everything would turn out fine for her wedding party. And sure enough, as I left the rain eased and the late afternoon sun began to break through.
