For lovers of the boutique B&B, this is Melbourne’s Mecca. Occupying a killer location, right in the heart of the city, Paul and Tish have transfused a new-world charm, style and at-home comfort into Melbourne’s oldest commercial bakery.....

.... Behind the claret brickwork and courtyard, the building is arranged over two higgledy-piggledy levels, with some stunning original features. Most prominent, of course, are the cavernous bakers’ ovens in the breakfast room, dating back to the 1850s. Elsewhere there’s a guest pantry with polished brick floor and computer terminal, and a sandy lounge whose giant upholstered sofas are surrounded by books. At one end an iron staircase curls up to the second floor; black Japanese treads lead you back down, beneath a bucket light-shade filled with dead bulbs. The glossy door of your bathroom matches the shower tiles and beside the porcelain bowl you’ll find a tiny pumice foot and woven basket of goodies. The colour scheme links bedrooms that are named after Melbournian notables: Spencer, Flinders and Buckley among them. You’ll certainly have Buckley’s chance of finding a more central location than this: the shuttle from the airport pulls up outside and whichever way you strike out you’ll hit a Melbourne monument: Telstra Dome, Queen Victoria Market, Crown Casino, Bourke Mall. The hopelessly romantic colonial tramcar restaurant begins its waltz round the city nearby.
