I passed a large river bearing the name of the station. I then passed a winery, pub and a road that all carry the name.....

.... I knew I was getting near! The family’s colonial ‘run’ was 30,000 acres in the 1860s, but today’s extant 4250 acres are still wonderful to explore. The homestead is surrounded by exquisite gardens and about the property I came across a rickety old swing-bridge leading to a picnic flat and swimming billabong (a swimabong?), old barns, young race-horses… and the two guest cottages. Bob’s has outstanding views of the alpine peaks from a wooden deck and the living room floods with morning sun, which reflects off deeply polished floors to walls in fresh limes, lavenders and rusty ochres. Chris’s Cottage is a sleepy, rustic place, planted between a giant plane tree and the river, which is but a bouquet’s fling away. As Single Men’s Quarters all the bedrooms open from the verandah, but the bathroom with its giant claw-foot bath connects inside with the living area. An alcove with a fire set behind the grate sets off warm, fuzzy, nostalgic feelings, as does the mantle plank jostling with bottles and candles from nights spent on the benches around the oak table. The gardens are open throughout summer and I bumped into a Ritchie cousin in the rose parterre who was recovering from conquering Everest. Nearby: skiing, bush-walking, fishing, Lake Eildon, 4WD-ing, exceptional national parks.
