I was told that in the middle of country Victoria there existed a formal English garden of extraordinary proportions. It didn’t begin to prepare me for what really is one of the most improbable, unexpected and fantastical sights I’ve seen on my travels around Australia.....

.... I arrived here out of the blue, around noon (a classic GG trick), and Margaret and Craig very sweetly shared their lunch with me. Then we toured the interconnecting garden rooms, Margaret papering over the cracks in my horticultural knowledge by calling out the botanical names as we passed a dazzling array of hedges, perennials and climbers. There’s a laburnum tunnel, box parterre and espaliered pears; a gazebo, a tower, even a Persian pavilion. Sunnymeade is a labour of love, a folly of whimsy and a testament to one man’s extraordinary talent. A self-taught botanist, viticulturist and stone-mason, Craig planted all this himself, finding inspiration in English gardens such as Hidcote (the pleached hornbeam hedges) and gardeners like Gertrude Jekyll (the crescendo of colour in the summer border). The award-winning garden is open to visitors, but you really should stay. It’s no surprise to find that Craig built the walled-in cottage overlooking the cool-climate vineyard. With pine dado boards and hand-stenciled walls, this sandstone sanctuary is stocked with Sunnymeade wine and home-made jams, which you can share with the rosellas and wrens on the verandah. I really can’t recommend it strongly enough.
