The Bank is the special place in town for two reasons: for the restaurant itself and for Anthony, whose enthusiasm and natural, genuine way with people creates its own atmosphere. He admits that nothing gives him so much pleasure as seeing his guests sitting round the outside tables chatting away under green parasols, perhaps during Sunday lunch on a warm day.....

.... This is in fact a formal restaurant and the food is extremely good. I know because I have eaten there. And the building, built in 1856, was once a Bank of Australasia. The original Victorian gadgetry remains intact: wooden security screens hidden in the window sills are ready to spring up to the 18-foot ceilings (no less!) and protect their windows; and the old gold vault makes a perfect wine cellar and many diners poke their heads in for a look. The whole compound is walled in and overnighters sleep in the converted stables at the back. Here you have lots of space and light, big iron beds and all you could need in the way of telly, CD player, bathroom bits and bobs, mini bar etc. The great thing is to eat at the restaurant and to be a part of The Bank experience for at least one night. In the words of one of The Bank’s regulars: ‘It’s an oasis of civilisation’. Historic town tours.
