It’s a perk of this job that you encounter magnificent places, people and scenery. In this last, little can rival the Great Alpine Road.....

.... The views from Mt. Hotham are amongst the best in Victoria. Or so I’m told. It was the dead of night when I reached the obfuscated summit and edged my car through enveloping cloud. After such a harrowing trip, Dreamers Mountain came as welcome refuge. I was met by a cheery Wendy, who pointed me to the local takeaway. Fresh lasagne in hand, I drove out to my own ash-panelled cocoon, lit a fire in the sunken den and soaked in the spa. In the morning, Mal served me breakfast on a deck cantilevered over a trout-filled lagoon. The day was ablaze with the fiery colour of autumn’s first burst and hummed to the sound of a docile tractor and the chatter of inquisitive geese. Mal and Wendy have created an idyll in the foothills of Mt Bogong. Inspired by Queensland’s vast wool-stores, the four steel-framed, corrugated-iron-roofed chalets are individually themed with a strong emphasis on renewable energy… and romance. Beyond the stone swimming pool, there’s a cavernous, barn-doored guesthouse showcasing Mal’s handiwork. After a dinner at the hand-made liquid amber and marble banqueting table, warm yourself by the open fire, then slip into the glass bath in your French-styled bedroom. Sometimes magnificent places, people and scenery all converge at the same spot. Come and see for yourself.
