It’s not every day that you get to meet a bona fide Antarctic explorer. John spent 14 months on the icy desert with the Bureau of Meteorology in the 1970s and this erudite Irish émigré’s tales from that time are fascinating.....

.... It’s a world far removed from Wilson’s Prom, whose verdant prominence looms in the background as we chat beside a crackling open fire. John built Vereker House to withstand the variable environment, utilising an atypical post-and-beam structure and adobe bricks. The result is a solid building full of rustic timber; you’ll see Cyprus pine, Douglas fir and red cedar used throughout, from the cathedral ceiling of the lounge to the wood-panelling in the bedrooms. What makes Vereker House so special is John and Mary’s extensive knowledge of the fauna and flora of Australia’s southernmost lobe. In the evenings, over wholesome Australian fare and a drop of the local grape or grain, there’s the opportunity to pick their brains. Breakfast is served in a bright conservatory, where, beyond a flurry of native birds imbibing their morning nectar, you can fortify yourself with a maritime panorama of the Yanakie Valley climbing the foothills of Mount Vereker. Although exactly for whom the mountain, and consequently the house, is named is subject to debate, one look in its direction and John will give you the forecast for the day. An excellent base-camp from which to conduct your own explorations.
