Bush fires almost consigned the Woodstock homestead to its doom in 2003. The flames got to within 30 metres of Sarah and Michael’s beloved old house before the buildings were saved.....

.... A huge relief not only for the family - daughter Clementine is now the fifth generation of Retallacks at Woodstock - but also for all those of us who enjoy staying at family-run farms with friendly hosts and beautiful environments. Guests are treated with rare style on this 4,000-acre sheep and cattle farm, with flowers in the bedrooms, silver on the table. Drought and fire have temporarily altered the landscape, but this will always be a superb property, bounded by the Brindabella Mountains and the Murrumbidgee River, with two more creeks and a 30-foot waterfall to boot. Sarah ran a catering company in London before marrying her Australian beau and she knows a bit about the hostly arts. I couldn’t stay for dinner, but spicy roast pumpkin, feta and olive salad, Thai salmon filo parcels, followed by grilled winter fruit and fig ice cream?… this is not simple Aussie farm fare. Guests have their own elegant dining-room, a drawing-room full of photos, paintings and antiques, and two bedrooms. The Retallacks want visitors to "get on with their own thing", so I suggest you do. Walk around the property, swim in the pool, laze in the garden, visit Canberra. Despite the farm’s isolation, Parliament House is just 25 minutes away.
