I'd been concentrating so hard on keeping my car on the dirt road – the rain had made it slippery - that I hadn't noticed the burgeoning scenery. I got the picture when I unfolded myself from the seat and beheld (no other word for it) mountains that seemed to have suddenly stood up from nowhere, low cloud lying between peaks like snow… and nearer to the lodge, kangaroos hopping about in the paddocks.....

.... I was swept up and in by Frank and Faye, introduced to everyone, given a glass of beer and we didn't stop chatting until an exquisite dinner came to an end hours later. Amazingly, neither of our hosts ever seemed to be absent and yet there was definitely no-one else helping in the kitchen... spooky! Finally Frank got us into rain gear and took us for a night drive on the farm to see the kangaroos and wombats - quite beautiful, the gum leaves twinkling like Christmas lights in the rain. The bedrooms at the main house line up Aussie homestead style, quaintly out-of-date with sliding doors out to the pool area. Avalanche has great character and the food is truly delicious. Masses to do, including horse-riding, 4x4 tours, lake fishing, bird-watching (50 species), shearing (doing, not just watching), rounding up cattle; they also run tours from Sydney to Melbourne via Avalanche.
