This rare and remarkable place leads you miles from the world of man, then rewards you with an enchanting oasis of civilisation. Jill bought the property - no road, no house, no nothing – in 1985 and established a fishing lodge.....

.... Now in ‘retirement’, she and David offer a self-catering cottage (rented to one group at a time) near the main house, with two simple bedrooms, a large kitchen and a wood-burning stove to counteract the night chill (the cottage is at 1100 metres). You can picnic down by the river, up in the hills or on the large rock at the end of the garden, which juts out above the water and provides the most perfect of views. The Outpost sits in 1000 acres of mostly untouched eucalyptus forest and the cottage is barely 70 metres from the Murrumbidgee River. There are great walks, deep swimming holes (watch for platypuses), a tennis court, a ‘bush’ croquet lawn and, of course, excellent fly-fishing (obtain a licence in advance). I arrived at dusk, one eye carefully watching for jay-bounding kangaroos and the other cherishing the views along the 29 km of dirt roads - including 4 km of driveway - that lead here from Adaminaby. Where you can buy food, by the way. Jill supplies full breakfast provisions and provides suppers with a bit of prior notice. Give yourself at least two nights. Canberra 2.5 hours away.
