In the late afternoon sun the Fitzroy Inn emits a lazy glow. A child of the mid-1830s, it’s a beautiful, terracotta-coloured structure, the oldest-surviving NSW inn in its original condition.....

.... Under the terms of the first land grant a minimum of £200 had to be spent on the building. That wasn’t cheap in 1835, so the inn is pretty big. There are two huge rooms upstairs, both deliciously simple, with white tongue-and-groove walls, white linen and gable windows. All six rooms in the main building are simple - the Lovells and Alois are ardent fans of the uncluttered look - all with massive showers and range-topping mattresses and there are four more rooms in the Schoolmaster’s Cottage nearby. The Fitzroy was their holiday home, but cometh the hour, cometh the lifestyle change and they decided to return it to its original role. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll search in vain for a reason to leave (ever) because there’s a restaurant on site. Cosmo and Gai run this and offer a small, seasonal menu. If there are six or fewer house guests they will often serve breakfast in the main kitchen. Make sure you wander downstairs where there has been much restoration; you can see the original kitchen area and the room for poorer visitors and admire the cell where convicts travelling to Berrima could be kept overnight. It still works, so watch your manners.
