I could have stumbled upon some idealised landscape from Beatrix Potter so dingly a dell was this! There are creeks and billabongs, melaleucas and ironbarks (reputedly the finest stand in the Southern Highlands), rhododendrons and a field of lavender. And, planted in the middle, the three cottages, bound to the scenery by a cocoon of green vegetation and lovingly watched over by Hector, Ann’s 50-year-old donkey.....

.... Sometimes self-catering cottages can seem sterile, but these have the happy lived-in feel of real homes. The largest, Lavender House, was built in the 1870s. Its wooden deck faces a grove of waratahs, while indoors there’s a large, wood-floored living area and claw-foot tub. The Studio Cottage next door is the cosiest of the three, made of convict-hewn stone salvaged from the 19th-century inn that once stood on the site. And set slightly apart, The Pottery is covered in flowers and shrubs. A rustic timber building, its insides are entirely sophisticated with handsome white bedrooms and lovely bathrooms. Ann provides innumerable breakfast goodies for the first two days of your stay, including bowls of oranges that you can juice in the machine, bacon, eggs and home-made jam. All cottages have secluded outdoor sitting areas and there is plenty of scope for wandering on the 46 acres. From time to time you can hear trains on the nearby railway, but this never derails the overall atmosphere of peace and seclusion.
