Houses, like cats, have many lives. During The Depression and WWII many of the houses in Manly were converted into holiday flats and, when renovated, the partition walls were dismantled to reveal perfectly-preserved cedar paneling and Baltic pine floorboards.....

.... Jill’s sitting-room is an excellent example, with its magnificent concertina wood doors, 400-year-old English blanket box and open fire that cackles away come winter. It’s all too tempting to settle in for the afternoon. Jill and her somewhat discerning cat, Puss, are music lovers and encourage visiting musos to strike up on the grand piano or her grandfather’s violin which he used to play to any who would listen. Not musical? Delve into a good book. Prize amongst these is her dad’s captivating memoir, ending with his journey to Australia from Shropshire in 1924, with its engrossing description of his first view of Manly. For those with more energy, take a bracing walk along the North Head or a swim at Manly beach and return to one of two guest rooms: one with cast-iron fireplace and a long ladder leading up to a lofty artist’s studio; the other with iron bed, bulging bookcase and French windows to the verandah, where you can recuperate under the fragrant frangipanis and the floodlit St Patrick’s College, nowadays less charmingly known as the International College for Tourism and Hotel Management. The monks have long-since gone west.
