You may not be greeted by Kathryn herself when you pull up to her smart Paddington terrace house, as her friends enjoy running it so much for her when she’s away, but you’ll know if she’s there from her cheery welcome. With a keen eye for precious properties, Kathryn bought the run-down terrace four years ago and put in much work in restoring it to its present and former splendour.....

.... Built in 1888, the house is an excellent example of Italianate Victorian architecture, with its cast-iron Sydney lace, double-height ceilings, detailed plasterwork and tiled hallway. Above the door, the stained glass announces "Tara", the town in Ireland where the builder came from. Kathryn has created an elegant European feel, with airy, sun-bathed rooms (at least they were sun-bathed when I visited) filled with pale, antique furniture. Or what she likes to call "shabby chic". Prize amongst these must be the 19th-century, French, washed-wood bed in La Grande bedroom. The first-floor rooms both have large windows and balconies (La Grande’s faces Queen Street; La Petite’s the rear courtyard garden with its espaliered camellias). But it is the top floor bedroom, Le Attic, of which Kathryn is most proud, as it best shows off her enterprising use of the natural features of the building. The dinky en-suite bathroom built around the chimney breast is a treat! Heart of fashionable Paddington with plethora of shops, restaurants and bars.
