A guest was rather smitten by Collits' Inn in 1827: "It is beautiful and picturesque," wrote Captain W. Dumaresq, "warm, comfortable and commodious on the inside.....

...." The captain’s early 19th-century view is no less true today. The inn has stood beneath Mount York in kangaroo-filled Hartley Vale since 1823, when it was established by a former convict. One of the oldest inns in the Blue Mountains, three governors (Brisbane, Darling and Bourke) stayed there between 1823 and 1832. Christine Stewart (the owner) rescued the inn from dereliction in 2001 and rebuilt it to a degree of luxury beyond the most feverish imaginings of Captain Dumaresq. The restoration remained faithful to the building’s origins wherever possible, with the same duck pond and stone stables nearby, bowed walls, low ceilings and original fireplaces in both dining-rooms. Antique oak benches and tables maintain the sense of romance and antiquity. The inn also concentrates on its bedrooms and cooking… and excels at every turn. Laurent spent ten years as a chef in Paris and then worked at one of the most popular French restaurants in Sydney, and as a result Collits’ Inn has been awarded two Best Restaurant awards. Enjoy your breakfast of rice pudding, croissants and baguettes, not necessarily in that order, while watching the roos mow the lawn. The inn has a history room and shop and a pioneer cemetery behind. There are many fascinating walks down the old roads that once led to the inn. Jenolan Caves nearby.
