You just won’t have enough eyes to cope with your first impressions of RooTreat. You break out of the trees after a few kilometres of gravel road (I saw rosellas, a fox and a tortoise en route) onto clear ground collared by forested hills on three sides.....

.... An impossibly idyllic 1830s stone and corrugated-iron homestead faces towards the fourth point of the compass, a wide valley that plunges down from the garden and ranges forth for miles and miles. The setting is not one inch short of exquisite. Closer to home, you are surrounded by green lawns, flowers, butterflies, birds, visiting kangaroos, fruit trees… with birdsong and the swish of air moving through gum leaves for musical accompaniment. There is a swimming pool with sensational views and a boating lake where mobs of kangaroos and the occasional wombat come to drink at dusk. By day, explorers will be out in the hills or peering into the house’s rickety outbuildings. Inside, this is the perfect rustic cottage, with wood floors, open fires, fresh flowers, faded rugs, brass beds, antiques, Aboriginal art works and an old wooden kitchen a-clatter with hanging pots and pans. John and Jolieske (‘Yoleeska’) live further up the mountain and come down to cook the breakfast and welcome their guests to heaven. You can visit the Mudgee wineries from here, but for me this is far too precious a find to waste a minute of my time somewhere else.
