You can stand safely in hilly Nundle and watch the herds of food writers as they migrate from Sydney to the Jenkins Street Guest House for the best grazing. Much fuss is rightly made, too, of the elegance and stylish simplicity of this converted bank (1936): polished wood floors and damask linen in bedrooms, sleek, chic bathrooms… and the downstairs restaurant (just thirty covers) smells as enticing as it looks.....

.... But I was even more impressed by the natural way you are welcomed in and how friendly and lively the place is. Judy outdoes her own ideal of a guest house, receiving guests as old friends and getting in amongst it with the gardening. In winter, snow settles on the highest ground surrounding Nundle and guests huddle round log fires after bracing walks. In summer, there is the garden, a channel of smooth lawn flanked by trees, which runs steeply down into a gully. This is the venue for pre-dinner drinks and, now and then, string quartets play on fine evenings. The guest house also owns a woollen mill in town, which you can visit, and a farm two kilometres down the road, available to all overnighting guests. Attractions include Jake the tame eastern grey kangaroo, historic gardens laid out in the late 1800s, a yabbie farm and forest walks. What don’t they have?
