The Brown family has been here long enough to have the road named after them, although in fairness it is no great act of vanity as it leads nowhere but their land. Sam’s father bought a weekender here in the 1940s, which opened up the land a little bit, but you are still pretty much at the top of a mountain, bang in the middle of the Maiala National Park, with rainforest all around.....

.... Red cedar, black bean and flooded gum trees all stand serene, home to rosellas, bower birds, golden whistlers, honey-eaters and rarer birds like the sooty owl and marbled frogmouth. Other often-seen forest creatures are pademelons (small wallabies), land mullets, lace monitors (goannas), butterflies and green tree frogs. Sam and Margaret hail from the outback, but chose Mt Glorious to retire to. Sam built four mountainside chalets, positioning them for the best views through treetops to the distant sea. Inside, they are warm and woody: wood-burners, high ceilings, fresh garden flowers, comfy beds, pretty fabrics… rather like a ski lodge, just without the snow. Very much without the snow in fact. Outside you’ll find old plough-disc barbecues and decks on which to sit and do very little indeed – listen to the birds, relax, read. Rainforest downpours are spectacular, forest mists roll in. The mountain closes down at night, so BYO food (each cottage has a kitchen) or Margaret can provide excellent delicious pre-cooked meals and breakfast baskets.
