The village paradise of Mission Beach lies between thick rainforest on one side and miles of white sand and the reef-filled ocean on the other. Sejala Beach Huts are right on the transition line between the two.....

.... You’ll know you’ve found them from the friendly-looking totem pole faces that greet you at the entrance. The funky huts have recently been refurbished yet remain vibrant and fun in toned-down tropical hues. Two are thirty metres from the beach while the third takes jungly refuge by the pool. All are cool, relaxed and understated with distressed wood floors, bamboo matting, seaward-facing sofas, and rollback doors onto the deck. The bathrooms emphasise your Australian rainforest location with showers in sculpted, corrugated iron booths and walls that open up to the garden. It’s quite liberating standing under a hot shower whilst being tickled by a fresh breeze, particularly with the gorgeous scent of L’Occitane toiletries wafting up with the steam. It is self-catering here, although the booking office can organize anything from car hire to reef and Dunk Island day trips as well as sorting out breakfast hampers and pointing you in the right direction for the best restaurants. I traded in my allocated breakfast-munching time for a stroll along the palm-lined beach. The compact golden sands seem to spread for miles and I would have walked all day if it weren’t for my watch and a diary full of appointments; fortunately you can leave those behind.
