This was Australia’s first railway station, although the ‘train’ was convict-powered. It is perhaps a measure of how much fun it was at the Port Arthur penal colony that pushing these goods wagons about was considered a cushy job.....

.... The building, built in 1838, has been taken over by Lorella and Lynton whose kitchen is the busy heart of the house and a factory for delicious aromas. I sat down to chat just in time to sample my first-ever peanut butter cookies hot from the oven. All the jams are home-made too and the breakfast eggs are fresh, local and a healthy yellow in colour. This is a hands-on B&B where your hosts cook your breakfast on demand and are there to offer assistance and point out the amazing wilderness walks of the area – the peninsula has the highest sea cliffs in Australia, for example. The building sits right by the waters of Norfolk Bay and a creaky wooden jetty demands that you walk out and contemplate the flat mirror of smooth water reflecting hills and boats. In the evening, I recommend you try the slightly mad French café/restaurant in Eaglehawk Neck for wood-fired pizza and on clear nights here the stars and stillness are awe-inspiring. So much exploration to do in the area and there’s always the fascinating Port Arthur penal colony. The night-time tours will put the shivers up you. The Convict Station is licensed and has a good range of Tasmanian beers and wines.[i/]
