Shielded by 100-year-old Moreton Bay fig trees and surprisingly close to Melbourne’s CBD, Lord Lodge sits right on Caulfield Racecourse. The Victorian mansion – designed by Rippon Lea’s architect, I’m told – also happens to be a fantastic B&B.....

.... Inside, rooms named after local champions are vast and extraordinarily detailed: hand-painted cornices and Baltic pine floorboards and the most intricate plasterwork. The sitting-room boasts a rare Champs Elysées-inspired ceiling design. Jacquie is a little dynamo, always looking for things to do. She hand-stenciled those wall panels herself! But however busy she is, she’ll always spare time for a chat and fill you in on horsey history. You see, first and foremost, Lord Lodge is a racing stable and is steeped in Australian racing history. Built in 1880 when Caulfield racecourse was a snake-infested swamp, its owner decided that a turret would be the safest place from which to watch the track work. Nowadays, you can get much closer to the horses. Before tucking into a "breakfast to die for", watch the misty morning track gallops and pool training or simply wander the old stables. The magnificent barn has a spellbinding presence with its dark wooden walls towering above the sawdust floor. Little wonder that it’s featured in many films, and that, along with the house, it is listed on the National Estate Register. A thoroughbred through and through.
