Chris and Amanda have put hammocks on the wide decks, a sort of pre-emptive strike so that foot-weary guests can sit while they gaze. And the gazing, over the Drumsara sugar cane plantation to the thickly-forested mountains of the lower Daintree National Park beyond, is fabulous! The double-story, split-level home is at treetop level and, since it is built right on the edge of a steep rainforest hillside, very open, light and airy.....

.... There are binoculars for you to spot celebrities - the valley below is a popular film location - but mostly you will train them on the jungle flora and fauna. Some animals even frolic on the verandah. Amanda filled me in on the wildlife while I filled myself with warm, fluffy scones, cream and rosella fruit jam. The world’s biggest Hercules moths come here to feed on the bleeding heart trees (there is one next to the pool) and all year round huge, cobalt Ulysses and Cairns birdwing butterflies live here. Giant (harmless) 5-foot goannas, tiny blossom bats, honey-eaters (related to the hummingbird), kingfishers, rare rifle birds, grey goshawks and striped possums are all seen too. Chris rowed for Cambridge, is a dive master (he’ll fill you in on all the best spots on the reef) and in his spare time made much of the furniture. Bedrooms are very comfortable and pretty with crisp linen. If you want to learn more about Queensland, this is the place.
