I felt incredibly at home sitting on the wide, vine-shaded verandah at Capers guesthouse. With its old honey-coloured sandstone, big stone fireplaces, English country style and stunning views onto green, rolling pastures and forest, it wouldn’t be far out of place in the Cotswolds.....

.... It’s hard to believe that the house was built only just before the turn of the millennium, but despite this there’s an awful lot of history in these walls. Examine them closely and you’ll see engraved on the surfaces names and chisel-marks of the ex-convicts who originally constructed a Sydney hospital with them some 150 years back. Now relocated to the Hunter Valley, the walls are witness to nothing but luxury and good times. Each room has air-conditioning, heating, its own sunny terrace and three have French windows that open onto the gardens. Both the guesthouse and in its lovely neighbouring cottage are full of antique furnishings, liberty print fabrics and chairs, old Chinese rugs and roaring fires. They are great places to snuggle and warm your toes during cold, wintry months and the cool stone floors are perfect for baking bush summer days. Jane used to be a caterer in Sydney and she serves delightful, candlelit suppers on silver at the elegant dining table. With great wineries, pleasant drives, lovely bushwalks and even the coast just under an hour away, this is a great base from which to linger in and around the valley.
