Strike gold! Buckland Valley, hemmed in by gorgeous forest, once attracted hordes of gold-diggers. The draw now is four studio cottages that line the hillside.....

.... ‘Studio’ fits perfectly as these are not cottages in the traditional sense, but rather contemporary rural pads of luxury – within Nature. Modern angles and jaunty roofs hint at the style within: smart leather armchairs, locally made, the woolliest of white rugs, polished timber floors, cream tones offset by warm-wood browns. A lesson in the art of attaching snow chains for the ‘slalom’ descent from Mt Hotham suddenly seemed worth it. Feet up by the wood-burner, supping a glass of red from a selection of regional wines, I would have felt tempted to stay like that all night, if it hadn't been for the prospect of snuggling under goose-down duvets. Following Sabine’s advice, I kept the bedroom blinds open in anticipation of being gently woken by dappled dawn light. It comes recommended – as does an outdoor breakfast when traces of mist still linger in the glens. In stylish, ‘open-plan’ bathrooms, you can shower with complete abandon. After travelling the world, Sabine and Eddie realized that the only way to stay in their dream place was to make it. Buckland was the closest they could find to their native Bavaria, substituting only gum for fir.
