It’s moments like this that make mine such a good job. In glorious countryside, I trundle up a jarrah-lined avenue, dappled by winter sun, to a shielded homestead.....

.... On a cushioned bench, a stretched-out cat is oblivious to chicks exploring the garden’s undergrowth. I let myself in to the entrance hall, whereupon I’m greeted with spicy smells of home-made chutneys, pickles and jams, the warm smiles of my hosts and an invitation to join them for lunch. Ken and Julie claim that, compared to other businesses they’ve run, this is a breeze. They certainly make it look that way. Bedrooms are large and uncomplicated: a comfy bed, fridge for wine and a private patio. The garden here is perennially colourful with lilac diosmas, lavender and rose parterres. There’s a dam surrounded by red gums and weeping willows and paddocks where kangaroos congregate. At the back, a croquet lawn is trimmed with azaleas. On the verandah, canvas chairs saddled with glossy magazines – Wine, Decanter, Gourmet Traveller – are silent reminders that you’re in wine country. After breakfast, waddle off to a winery: Evans & Tate, Vasse Felix and Moss Wood are clustered close by. Craythorne is a farm and turkeys, ponies, alpacas and chooks roam free. Some city slickers become so taken with the animals that Julie does a roll-call when they’ve left.
