You might not have considered hiring a boat when you go up the Queensland coast, but I recommend this adventurous option to even the most inexperienced sailors. The charter company will hold your hand and even provide crew if needed (at an additional cost).....

.... After a morning’s briefing you will be given the helm and off you sail, around 74 exquisite islands fringed with coral reef and white-sand beaches. The Whitsundays straddle the Great Barrier Reef and you will spend your days snorkelling and diving on the reefs, swimming with dolphins off the boat… or lounging on deck eating Bounty bars. There are eight island resorts, all with gorgeous swimming pools, some with golf courses, offering overnight moorings (priced per boat: about $66 for Hamilton Island, $45 for Daydream) or you can drop anchor in one of the many bays and coves. All craft are equipped with snorkelling gear, linen, radios (you log in twice daily), hot water, fridge, CD players, BBQ and even motorised dinghies. Vessels can be fully catered or you BYO food (some islands have restaurants too). Boats are state-of-the-art and range from cruising or performance sailing yachts with wooden interiors, to sailing catamarans with huge deck space and motor cruisers for the non-sailors. The boats are excellent value for a group and five nights (minimum hire) are just enough to see the area. Fuel for cruisers about $30 - $40 a day depending on boat size. Kids welcome.
