Sitting in the mist of Kangaroo Island’s extraordinary natural beauty is this rather grand 3,000-acre farm. Having navigated past penguins and kangaroos (where else will you do this outside a zoo?), I arrived to be greeted by Graham, who ensured I was settled in before joining other guests for a sumptuous dinner.....

.... You need to know that Lyn is a fantastic chef and runs cooking courses on the island. Stranraer is the Wheaton family home, always has been. It was Graham’s father who established the property back in 1911 and he who put in the cricket oval. As farming clearly runs in Graham’s blood, so does hospitality in Lyn’s. She presides over Stranraer, keeping the place spic-and-span, extremely comfortable, with lots of homely comforts and fine cooking (she likes to use the excellent Kangaroo Island produce wherever possible). Bedrooms have big brass beds, ornate fireplaces, high, plaster-moulded ceilings and thick rugs on wooden floors – all very comfortable – and big, original, wooden window-frames that flood the rooms with light. Bathrooms, instead of being small and en-suite, are big and next-door, with cast-iron baths, screens, wooden blinds, plants and smart tiles. Breakfast is the biggest imaginable. This is a great base from which to explore the island. Close by you’ll find the beach at D’Estress Bay or stay at home and wander the farm. There are two large lagoons where a rich and varied birdlife gathers. A very peaceful spot and the Wheatons’ warm hospitality is second to none.
