You can come to Poltalloch for many reasons - the walking, the birdlife, the lake – but chief among its bounties are its history and how beautifully it has been preserved. Poltalloch was one of those big stations of the 1800s, where, if the owner got his sailing boat stuck in the mud 40 miles away (and he did), he sent his minions off to dig it out and carry it back.....

.... The mood has mellowed these days, but the past lives on. The smithy, the shearing sheds and the store, all original, survive mostly intact. Beth will proudly show you round, answer your questions and let you explore lost worlds – special indeed. Elsewhere are two flight ponds where much birdlife gathers, low hills with clumps of gum trees and Lake Alexandrina (Australia’s largest), gateway to the Murray. You can swim from the beach and at the boathouse you’ll find surf skis and rowing boats. Alternatively, arrive under sail and moor here. You can stay in various places – Beth will help you choose. The old farm buildings have been renovated in keeping with the place. Don’t expect anything too fancy, but if you like the sound of a snug, romantic cottage, wood-burners, stone chimneys, sisal matting and crimson sunsets over the lake, you’ll be in heaven. Coorong National Park is very close, a spectacular wetland - local guided tours can be arranged.
