Peter, an English Sydneysider, moved up to Airlie Beach a few years ago (a retirement present) and now spends his days instructing gardeners, watching the cricket, boating and strolling around Airlie - an Englishman abroad. He lives at the top of the hill, less than half a kilometre from the beach, with outstanding views across the water and islands.....

.... In the morning you can count the boats out as you sit on the shaded verandah and have breakfast. At night, take your glass of wine and count them back in. "I know what day of the week it is from which boats come in" Peter cheerfuly informed me. Breakfast is a feast - you should allow a leisurely hour for it. Wedgewood china stands on crisp linen and you get tropical fruit, fresh juices, cereals and mueslis, bacon and eggs, toast and the company of a flock of rainbow lorikeets. Bedrooms are suites, with terracotta tiles, bamboo, ceiling fans (and air-con), cedar wood blinds, rugs, big beds (with starched sheets), sofas and screens so you can sleep with the doors open. Both rooms open onto their own verandah and there is also a pool shaded by a pompoo tree and flanked by flowers that shed their petals in the water. Peter will happily advise and book trips: you can dive or snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, sail among the 74 Whitsunday islands, fish, whale-watch or head to Cedar Falls and swim in fall-fed rock pools.
